What is MathCounts?
MathCounts is a math problem solving program for students in grades 6 - 8. Each year, local competitions sponsored by TSPE (Texas Society of Professional Engineers) is held in February. Students qualify for this by attending practice meetings and taking a test in January at school. Qualifying teams and individuals from the local competition are then eligible to compete at the state competition in March. The nationals competition is held in May.
What does MathCounts competition consist of?
The MathCounts competition consists of 4 rounds:
Sprint Round - 30 problems in 40 minutes, each problem worth 1 point, no calculators
Target Round - 8 problems given in pairs (2 at a time), 6 minutes a pair, each problem worth 2 points, calculators allowed
Team Round - 10 problems in 20 minutes, teams of 4 students, calculators allowed
Countdown Round - top 10 individual scorers go against each other in pairs to see who can answer accurately the fastest
